Why Have a Wear It Purple Day?

Because growing up is challenging enough.

Young people are already trying to work out who they are, where they belong and how they fit into the world. LGBTQIA+ young people can carry an additional burden: being bullied or ridiculed by their peers, used as a political football by politicians, and told by some religious conservatives that there is something wrong with them.

There isn’t.

Wear It Purple Day is a simple but important reminder that young people deserve to grow up feeling safe, supported, and accepted for who they are.

They don’t need adults turning their identity into a political debate. They don’t need religious condemnation. And they certainly don’t need bullying.

They need families, friends, schools, and communities that have their backs.

So why have a Wear It Purple Day?

Because sometimes wearing a colour says something very important:

You are seen. You are valued. You belong.

And to those determined to make life harder for LGBTQIA+ young people, I have an even simpler message:

LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!
