Madden called on to say ‘sorry’

Peter Madden, the Christian Democrat candidate for Sydney, has been called on to apologise to the LGBTI community over his comments that Mardi Gras is “flagrant and militant promotion of sexual immorality” and homosexuals are “bruised and confused”.

Following a 2GB radio debate earlier this month with Madden, president and founder of Freedom 2[b]e, Anthony Venn-Brown has established an online forum and poll.

The forum says: “Peter Madden … has made false statements, accusations and misrepresentations about gay and lesbian people, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the LGBTI community as a whole.

“These statements are not only irresponsible and insensitive, they are highly offensive to LGBTI and to their friends and family as well.”

Madden first hit the headlines with his call on YouTube for Mardi Gras to be shut down, which he later “compromised”, suggesting it be moved into a stadium instead.

In the 2GB debate with Venn-Brown, Madden made sensational claims such as there being no evidence that homosexuality is biological, that gay male sex is a “very dangerous thing” and the life expectancy of gays in Denmark and Norway is 20-25 years less than straights [sic].

Venn-Brown also points to a 2DayFM interview on his blog where Madden admits that he did not see last year’s parade and has “been out of Sydney for a lot of years”.

Meantime, Australian Marriage Equality national convenor Alex Greenwich is scheduled to take part in a debate with Madden on Kerri-Anne on Channel Nine this Wednesday.

The original debate was postponed last week due to Christchurch earthquake coverage.
